Grey’s Anatomy first aired on-screen about a decade and a half ago and will complete 17 seasons/363 episodes in December. Despite running for 15 years, the fans are looking forward to another season aka season 18.
The show is about medical experts and how they juggle both their professional and personal lives. Over the course of the seasons, the characters grow as people, make tough decisions, go through all kinds of experiences like friendship, heartbreak, success, failures etcetera.
Grey’s Anatomy – News About Season 18
The 17th season will end on December 10th, 2020 after being cut short due to the Covid-19 threat but fans are already excited to hear about the 18th season. However, the creators of the show have not made any official announcements yet so we cannot say if the show will return for another season or not.
Ellen Pompeo (who plays Meredith Grey on the show) has said in an interview that she is willing to do another season however her contract only extends to season 17. If the creators decide to do another season, her contract will be renewed and fans will surely find out.
In an interview with Deadeline. Karey Burke, ABC’s entertainment president, has said, about the 18th season that there is a discussion going on with the producers whether the show will come back for another season or not.
She said “I can’t comment any further,” Burke added, “I’m hopeful that Grey’s Anatomy stays a part of our schedule. They certainly know that we’d like it to be part of our schedule for as long as they are interested in making more episodes.”
Even if the show does get renewed for a new season, fans will have to be patient to see new content because the filming will not begin until this pandemic is over or the threat of the virus significantly reduces.
As of November 2020, many countries that had been recovering from the first wave of the virus are going back to lockdown due to the increasing number of Covid-19 patients. Due to these uncertain circumstances, the shooting will delay till it is safe to begin working on the show again.
Many shows have delayed filming due to the virus therefore the release date of new seasons of various shows is highly likely pushing to the end of 2021 or even to 2022.
The same will be the case for Grey’s Anatomy if a new season is announced, as there no certainty regarding when the filming will begin, and if it does commence at the beginning of the year 2021, it will either be released at the end of the mentioned year or in 2022.
What Might Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Have in Store for the Show’s Fans?
Over the course of 15 years, the show has had some of the most major turning points like the deaths of many loved characters like George O’Malley, Mark Sloan, Lexie Grey, Derek Shepherd etcetera.
There are a couple of reasons which have led the fans to believe that if season 18 comes to their screens, it will be the end of the show.
A few people from the team of Grey’s Anatomy have admitted that the original plan for how the end of the show would be has been abandoned due to unforeseen circumstances however whatever the end maybe, it will definitely leave the fans satisfied and content.
The showrunner Krista Vernoff said that the team of the show was not able to shoot the last 4 episodes due to the pandemic so some of the season 17 content is still left however they may change the story a little if the show is renewed for another season.
Nothing can be said with confirmation until ABC and the show creators decide that the show is coming back for another season.
Who Will Be Part of the Cast for Grey’s Anatomy Season 18?
As the new season is not yet confirmed, there is a definitive list of who will be part of the cast and who will not be. However some of the main characters who have been around since the past few years or even the beginning like Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey, Richard Webber.
Owen Hunt, Jackson Avery etcetera will most likely return for the new season. Other characters will return but there is no confirmation about who will and who will not.
There is also a prediction of Patrick Dempsey (who played Derek Shepherd, the deceased husband of Meredith Grey) returning for another season after he appeared in season 17 as Meredith’s hallucination while she was fighting against the Covid-19 virus. Similarly, the character could appear in some episodes of the 18th season too in flashbacks or in imagination.
Will Season 17 or 18 Be the End of Grey’s Anatomy?
There have been speculations that the current season or the unannounced new season might be the end of the show because the creators and actors feel it is time that the present characters get an ending however there is no conclusive decision made yet and the fans of the show can remain hopeful that they might get to see more than one more season.
As Karey Burke also said “Grey’s Anatomy will live as long as Ellen is interested in playing Meredith Grey.”. Around 4 episodes from the 17th season were cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic going on.
