The psychological thriller set in the 1890s has surely got us all hooked. The Alienist starring Dakota Fanning, Luke Evans, and Daniel Bruhl is an American television series. It was first released on January 22, 2018. Based upon the remarkable success and popularity of season 1, the show was renewed for a second season which was released in July 2020.
The series is based on Celeb Carr’s novel series by the same name. There is a total of three books in the Carss series. As the first two seasons are based on the first and second books respectively, we are desperately hoping for a third season.
Although we can’t help but notice how the third book has a marginally different approach to well… everything. Even the timeline of the third book is tremendously different from the first two parts. It is set in 2016, whereas the first two books are set in the 1890s.
So, will The Alienist be renewed for a third season?
At the moment there is no confirmation from the creative team about the third season. But the delay could easily be caused by the negotiations between Netflix and TNT.
Yes, you read that right. Although the show is insanely popular on Netflix, The Alienist is not a Netflix original series. The show is originally produced by the American broadcaster TNT. This pretty much gives them all the rights when it comes to the renewal of The Alienist for season 3.
And even if TNT comes around to producing a third season, there are some serious technical
issues with the shooting. Travel restrictions due to Covid-19 mean that international shooting is virtually impossible. Besides, we have to maintain social distancing, remember?
So, even if a third season is likely, probably won’t be seeing our favorite investigators anytime soon.
If a third season of The Alienist would be made, when will it release?
Like we have mentioned before, aside from the matter of renewal and the Netflix and TNT matter, there is a lot of unpredictability. With the coronavirus on the horizon, many actors and directors and unwilling to compromise on the SOP. And rightly so. We still haven’t recovered from the previous losses.
So, given the circumstances, the third season (if it is agreed by TNT) would probably be released somewhere in 2021 to 2022.
Who can we expect to see in The Alienist season 3?
Well, we have the primary team consisting of stars Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning. We can conclude with a hundred percent confidence that we would likely see them again in season 3.
Then our best guess is that Brian Geraghty, Q’orianka Kilcher, Matt Lintz, Rosy McEwen, Robert Ray Wisdom, Douglas Smith, and Matthew Shear would be gracing our screens with their presence too!
Of course, there is always the chance the creative team would change the cast of season three altogether. (As was the case with season 2). Plus, even the third installment in the series by Celeb Carr took on a different path. So, there is no reason for The Alienist team not to follow in their footsteps.
Thus, there is very little that we can conclusively say at the moment. But isn’t it part of the fun?
How The Alienist keeps you second-guessing everything; the cast, the plot, even the release or possibility of a new season. Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on your ability to deal with suspense.
Anyway, what can we expect from the plot of season 3?
Well, that’s really a very difficult question to answer. As the creative team behind the series is hell-bent on giving out as little information as possible, all we have are guesses at this point.
Even Celeb Carrs novel doesn’t give us any pointers at this point. Carrs first two installments in the series are set in the 1890s.
The third book, Surrender, in the installment, is however set in 2016. So, you see there is a good chance that the team would write their own script to keep the historical essence of this American period drama.
But there is no reason to not ponder over the storyline of season 3, a little bit. The book is set in 2016. The current story follows the story of a criminal psychologist known as Dr. Trajan Jones. And Carr has surely portrayed the characters as vivid and crisp as can be.
Critical acclaim for The Alienist
The Alienist is one of the most popular historical, psychological thrillers. Available on Netflix, this show has turned some serious heads and will probably get even popular.
The series has won many awards and accolades including the Primetime Emmy award, Art Director’s Guild award, and was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award. This is one of the few series in which both the plot and the acting is simply phenomenal.
Thus, given the above facts, we are just not ready to bid farewell to our historical
investigators just yet. And we sure as hell hope that The Alienist team doesn’t either.
Well, there is no final verdict that we can give you at this point. The team is yet to announce the renewal of The Alienist for the third season. But don’t be disappointed just yet!
Based on the ratings and the insane popularity of the show, there is no reason that we can’t have another season of this show. So, let’s just assume that TNT and Netflix are negotiating over the rights and logistics of a third season. This may not be true, but we got to give ourselves a smidgen of hope, right?
Anyway, for now, all we can do is wait and watch. Let’s hope that the Covid-19 pandemic gets under control and the situation returns to some semblance of normalcy. Till then, our best bet is to wait patiently. But hey! Patience is a virtue like none other!
