Rubeus Hagrid is one of the infamous characters of the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling. Introduced in the book ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, Hagrid is half-human and half-giant. He is the keeper of keys of Hogwarts which makes him a very important character in both the movie series and the books.
Being a warm, loyal, and friendly character, Hagrid is surely an unforgettable part of the Harry Potter books and movies series.
The Height of Hagrid in the Harry Potter Books
You must have noticed that J.K Rowling has a very unique style of writing. Therefore, there are no exact measurements of Hagrid’s height in the book series.
However, J. K. Rowling has described him as being twice as tall as an average man and nearly five times as wide.
The average male height is about 5.9 feet (1.75 m) tall. According to this benchmark and description, Hagrid’s height should be around 11 to 12 feet (3.00-3.30 m). This is a quite reasonable and befitting estimate considering that he is half-human and half-giant, so his height should be considerably more than average man, yet a little smaller than a giant.
How Tall is Hagrid in the Harry Potter Movies?
According to Wikipedia, Hagrid is portrayed as an 8 ft 6 inches (2.60 m) giant in the Harry Potter movies.
Managing to portray an ordinary human as a giant is always a challenging task. Robbie Coltrane, the actor that plays Hagrid in the movies is a plus size man (6′ 1″ or 1.85 m), but he is certainly not 8 feet tall.
To cope with this, the team shot the movie with a really tall body double who was made to put on a giant head prop of Hagrid. So, in the scenes where Hagrid is filmed standing up with others, it is not the original actor, but actually, his body double.
The team also ensured to put layers and layers of clothing on Hagrid to make him appear much wider than he actually is.
Another trick that they employed to make Hagrid appear larger was using two sets of furniture. There was a miniature set of furniture in scenes that featured only Hagrid and oversized furniture where Hagrid is seen with other people.
This trick forces our mind to build a perception of Hagrid’s size based on the surroundings, so that it tricks us into believing that Hagrid is much larger than he actually is.
How Tall is Hagrid in Real Life?
Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor that plays the role of Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies is actually a big man in real life too. He towers a little over 6 feet tall and is quite a wide man. Therefore, he was an ideal selection for his role.
